I happened to notice the my AT&T bill was higher this month and, in spite of the deliberate complexity of the 4 page bill, located a "minimum usage charge" for long distance even though I do not use my home phone for long distance AT ALL. EVER.

Don't want long distance, just a basic phone phone. The AT&T rep told me that beginning July 1, everyone would be charged a 2.00 minimum usage fee which become 4.86 after fees and taxes. The way they so quietly slide the additional, unnecessary fees on is sneaky and infuriating. AT&T - COME ON!

Why are you gouging your long time customers????

This will be my last month with AT&T. I will be very busy communcating this info in multiple ways.

Product or Service Mentioned: Att Phone Service.

Monetary Loss: $4.

If You Have Been Slammed:

1. Call 1-700-555-4141 (toll free) to verify your long distance provider or call 1-(your area code)-700-4141 to verify your local toll provider.

2. Tell your local phone company that you did not request a change in your long distance service. Ask the company to reconnect you to your previous carrier and have unauthorized charges removed from your bill.

3. Call the company listed on your telephone bill as the service provider. Inform the company that caused the slam that you did not request its service, that you want it canceled immediately and that you will only pay the charge your preferred carrier would have imposed. If you have actually paid any charges billed by the carrier, inform the carrier that you are entitled to a refund unless the carrier can provide proof of your authorization for the carrier change, and you want all switching charges removed from your bill.

4. Call your preferred long distance carrier and ask to be reconnected with no "change charges."

5. Contact the Georgia Public Service Commission, if the issue is not resolved to your satisfaction.

P.S. Kudos to the reps I've talked to by phone. All but one ATT customer rep over the years, especially those with BellSouth previously (excellent service), have been personable and capable and our ATT repair rep gave us his cell phone # if landline problems came back within a month's time (due to rain). ATT had a LD billing software glitch a couple of months last year that I called to correct, so I figured the min charge was another glitch, but no, it was intentional. The GA PSC should have a copy of the ATT April letter-announcement available for your review because I believe the change, essentially a rate hike, has to first be okayed by the GA PSC Board. But clarify or correct my info please where necessary. (The GA PSC would be the agency to complain to re the min usage fee also. See too the agency's consumer advisories.)

Re: MIN USAGE CHGE. Same scenario for me, no notice, a surprise. ATT customer rep said he'd received a letter in April (2011). Did any one of you receive a separate letter or see it announced in your bills? An Atlanta TV news reporter interviewed a woman this summer who warned viewers to check their bills for the charge.

Re: Slamming

BTW, for those being switched to ATT LD w/o your permission, in Georgia, ATT is regulated by the GA Public Service Commission (PSC). Go to the PSC of state.ga.us site to read about LD carrier slamming. Giving links in a post is forbidden, so here is the last paragraph of the page (thank you Pissed Consumer site for this forum):
