Verified ReviewerEmployees adding plans to accounts without permission
I went to AT&T to upgrade my daughter's cell phone. The employee, who I later learned was a manager, asked for my password.
Moments later, I received a text thanking me for my purchase and notifying me that I was now signed up for the AT&T Next Anytime Plan. I immediately informed her that I had received a message stating that she had added this to my account without my consent and that I didn't want it. I asked her to remove it. She agreed.
After paying and signing my receipt, she reassured me twice that it had been removed, and we then left. An hour later, I checked my account and found out she had lied to me. Therefore, I called AT&T's contact, 800#, and was informed that I would have to wait 14 days before I could remove it. I called back the next day and was informed that the store could remove it.
I called the store and was told that the manager would be in on Friday. On Friday, I went to the store and was told: 'Oh, I made a mistake— today is actually her day off.' So I am now wondering how many other customers are being scammed in this way. What about elderly people or customers who aren't tech-savvy enough to check behind them?
Does the store receive a sort of commission for signing up so many customers? This is both wrong and scam-like and needs to be reported.
Preferred solution: The unauthorized plan removed and refunded. Also, investigation into how many other customers are being scammed this way.
User's recommendation: Check behind them after your transaction is complete. Use the APP and online account services to check.

Verified Reviewer | Port Wentworth, GeorgiaTotally bad company overall!
I've only been with this company for 3 months and they are trying to charge me $564 on the first month. Talked to them and they gave me a *loyalty discount* so I paid them like $145.
The following month I got hit $275 and I don't even use my phone that much and I have Xfinity Internet in the house so I don't even use my data. On top of that my due date was every 17th of the month. They suspended my service 3 days prior the due date and I got so mad at them. They fixed it but then I saw my new bill, of course they are trying to charge $40 for reactivation fee when they are the one who suspended my service for no reasons.
On top of that my service is really slow when I'm not home and I've been getting a lot of telemarketer and spam risk calls. They also have not unlock my phone ever since I requested to them to do it in the opening of my account/service. Still not unlock right now. I'm so fed up of them already and I told them to suspend my account but of course I'll have an existing balance when I already told them to close it after the issue if suspension.
They reactivated it and now u owed them again.
I need to do something about this but don't know what to do. I need some advice please!

Verified ReviewerScrewed me out of $880
There's a whole lot to my story but to make a long story short, the replacement phone that I received from Asurion, I didn't receive for several months. As soon as I had it, I set it up, and called to have it turned on.
Once I did that, the guy who had it turned on told me that I did not need to send the phone back. I specifically asked him, "do I need to send the phone back?" And he said " no you don't need to do anything after this." Then, days after I put my account on auto pay, I received a $630 charge on top of the $250 I already paid to them, because they said they had not received my phone back.
I honestly thought that they had received it back because my husband had me take it phone to the post office, or what I thought was mine. I asked him about it yesterday, he said he couldn't remember.
I have end stage liver disease and am on full-disability. My mind is forgetful, I get things mixed up, and I just can't handle having to deal with situations like this.
It seems like there's always at least one if not more happening. On top of that, my husband is the type of person who likes to clone my phone, and stuff like that to see what I am up to...
All I know is I came across the phone find app yesterday, to see if I could locate it, and it shows it's right here at my house. I am blown away! However I have looked through everything, as were in the process of moving with boxes everywhere, and I cannot locate it.
Is anyone know of a better locate app or something to find exactly where it is?
I tried to put a stop payment on the payment that they put through which was over $800, and my bank disputed it, but then sided with them because I did have it set up on auto pay.
I am so angry at this point! I'm on full disability, my husband is not around for me much, and I'm having to handle everything by myself. I know what I was told, and I know what I thought as far as the phone being sent back. But, like I said, it's obviously here because that's what it shows!
I don't know what to do and that charge just sucked up every bit of money I had to pay the rest of my bills so I am totally screwed!
It makes me so angry because they don't listen to you and they patronize you and they make you feel like you've done all these things wrong! They didn't used to be so bad, but they've gotten so much worse!
And even when I call them multiple times, each one tells me something different so I don't know what to believe! I call asurion and they said that they can help me and then they just transfer me over to AT&t and it makes me so angry!

Verified Reviewer | Pontiac, MichiganUnauthorized addition of Asurion Protect Advantage insurance to my AT&T business account.
This is the third time that Asurion Protect Advantage insurance has been added to my AT&T business account without my consent. The most recent incident occurred in November 2024, despite my previous complaints to AT&T and my account representative.
At least two of these unauthorized charges originated from the AT&T authorized retailer at 1270 Walton Blvd., Rochester Hills, MI.
This unethical practice appears to be a predatory tactic by sales representatives, likely driven by commission incentives, and it tarnishes AT&T's reputation. These repeated incidents have caused significant frustration and financial inconvenience.
I have filed a report with the FTC (#18045****) and am prepared to take legal action if necessary to resolve this issue and seek damages. AT&T needs to take accountability and stop this dishonest behavior.
User's recommendation: Scrutinize your interactions very closely to avoid fraud and deception.

Verified Reviewer | Chicago, IllinoisResolved: Customer misinformation and deception
Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with apology. Received an email from State Attorney's office saying AT&T responded to my complaint. I suspect AT&T only acted if I had not gotten the Attorney General involved.
However, she never sent it and upon getting my bill, I phoned customer service to see why my bill had increased so much. They said the price of the phone was $729 and that they could not accept payment in full. They also said I had 14 days to return it but the last day was that day. The store would have been closed by the time I got there, so I phoned them several times to let them know I would be returning the phone the next day.
I just kept getting a busy signal each time I called. When I took the phone back the next day, Hero said she meant that the phone was $5.99 a month and then put her manager, Bob Wells on speaker phone. He said it was past the 14 day period and when I told them I tried to call them, Hero said their phone had been broken for two weeks. They would not consider that the store is closed on Sundays and there is no way a customer can return the phone on the 14th day if it was a Sunday.
Bob said the policy doesn't say business days. Their return policy is not listed on the receipt. Needless to say, they refused to take the phone back and Hero kept insisting she meant it was $5.99 a month.
I asked her if I could return the accessories I had also purchased and she said yes, but she printed the receipt and then said it was past the 14 days.
Unfortunately, I got nowhere with AT&T customer service. I was given the run around by several people sending me to different departments where James of the loyalty department said he also could not do anything for me.
I have filed a complaint with the Attorney General's Consumer Complaints Department and am prepared to consult an Attorney for this fraud and deceptive practices.

Verified ReviewerThey damaged my property, and there is no one to accept a claim.
This letter was sent to the Office of the Chairman at AT&T. They damaged my lawn when installing new cable service for my neighborhood.
I need to have someone repair the lawn. They have sent me in circles with nowhere to file a claim with them.
Please read my letter to them:
-----
I am not a customer of AT&T.
I am writing regarding AT&Ts liability to repair damage done to my lawn when installing a new (fiber optic?) cable on an easement on my property.
The damage was done several months ago. I have given sufficient time for the ground to settle to see if the lawn will recover without paying someone to repair it. It has not recovered.
The area is approximately 8 feet by 11 feet (88 square feet) which is lower than surrounding surfaces.
It collects water, breeds mosquitos, will not regrow grass properly, and cannot be mowed properly because of the mud tearing up the ground.
I have exhausted any apparent opportunity to file a claim with AT&T. I have been given enough phone numbers of what part of AT&T manages such matters that I assume that continuing to call more numbers will be fruitless and will only cost me $200 an hour in my billable time. Here is a history of my efforts to do so:June 17 11:00 AM: Call to AT&T Customer Service (877) 490-****. I explained the situation.
I was directly to contact AT&T Risk Management.June 17 11:29 AM: Call to AT&T Risk Management (314) 235-****. The recorded message instructed me that to file a new claim, I would need to provide my name, address, telephone number, and a description of the nature of the claim. The recorded message promised a return call within 48 hours. That call was not returned.June 20 4:14 PM: Second call to AT&T Risk Management (314) 235-****.
The recorded message instructed me to provide my name, address, telephone number, and a description of the nature of the claim. The recorded message again promised a return call within 48 hours. That call was not returned.June 24 9:45 AM: Third call to AT&T Risk Management (314) 235-****. The recorded message instructed me to provide my name, address, telephone number, and a description of the nature of the claim.
The recorded message again promised a return call within 48 hours. I stated that due to two failures of AT&T Risk Management in responding within their own 48-hour period, I would be paying someone to repair the lawn and would sue AT&T in Texas small claims court.June 24 1:08 PM: Received a call from AT&T Risk Management. Apparently the threat of litigation was enough to motivate your employee to respond. The woman said that I had contacted the wrong number at AT&T.
She said that this department was only from damage done to AT&T property. I told her that I should have received a response to my first call informing me of this. Her response was that she had no obligation to inform me that I was calling the wrong AT&T department despite the telephone message saying that this was the office to file a new claim and that a response to information left would be received within 48 hours. To be clear, this womans arrogance was exceptional.
She provided me with another number to call to file my claim.June 24 1:13 PM I called (800) 288-**** as directly by the arrogant woman from AT&T Risk Management. This was an automated customer service number which asked for all sorts of information which only a current AT&T customer would have. I was given the wrong number to call. This number directly me to call Liberty Mobile (833) 641-**** or 611.
The number that arrogant woman at AT&T Risk Management provided was for AT&T Mobile customers. I am not an AT&T customer, and my complaint was about property damage having nothing to do with mobile service. At this number, I spoke to a man who made it clear that I had been given the wrong number by the arrogant woman at AT&T Risk Management. He gave me another number to call.June 24 1:16 PM I called (800) ****-**** the number the man at Liberty Mobile provided.
This was another automated customer disservice number which wanted my account number (I have none), the kind of service I have (I have none), and whether this was for home or business to which I responded neither. I was disconnected again.June 24 1:25 PM I called the AT&T Risk Management number again. I provided all the required information again. I noted that I had been sent on a wild goose chase, and that I would be proceeding to have a professional service repair my lawn and then sue AT&T for the costs I incur.
I am writing to let you know that I have made all reasonable efforts to file a complaint and allow AT&T to process that claim without litigation.
Your company has consistently failed to offer me an avenue to proceed without litigation, and I am tired of diverting my time (billable at $200 per hour) to dealing with your dysfunctional company.
When the repairs are complete, I will file a complaint in Texas small claims court.
Apparently, the only way to get my complaint to the right department at AT&T is by filing a lawsuit. You have been given a reasonable opportunity to manage this without litigation. In particular, your Risk Management department had two opportunities to respond within their self-imposed response period (48 hours) and failed to do so.
Then, they had an opportunity to direct me to another department which they claim was for receiving claims against AT&T (although their recorded message which I have recorded says that their office is for filing new complaints).
Many of the calls above were recorded. They will play well in front of a judge and/or jury regarding my efforts to resolve this without litigation.
I have three landscaping firms which are considering bidding on the repair work.
I will take the lowest bid. I suspect that you have relationships with firms that do this sort of work for you on a contractual basis perhaps at lower cost. However, since you failed to be responsive to my efforts to have us work out a solution agreeable to both parties, I will simply resolve this problem by contracting for the repairs to be completed and then see you in court.
By the way, this letter (absent my name and address) is being posted online.
I want as many people as possible to understand how to deal with AT&T when your (or your contractor) damages their property when cabling a neighborhood for AT&T service. Hopefully, it will save other people time, money, and aggravation.
- Do not return calls as promised
- Do not know whom to call to file a claim
- Disrespectful

Verified ReviewerAT&T Gives Advertisers Access to Your Phone
At&t gives advertisers access to your phone so that they know when your phone is in use. Research has shown that you are more likely to answer a call from someone while you are using your phone.
Your privacy is sold to the highest bidder. Your peace and privacy are of ZERO value to AT&T. This is why you are receiving nonstop cold calls from advertisers that are selling you roofing. The roofing companies pay for a list of people who have had phone conversations about roofing.
Your phone is listening in on your private conversations. By the way, they are twice as expensive as the other carriers with horrible customer service.
- Disruptive to business and personal life

Verified Reviewer | Scottsdale, ArizonaTrouble porting phone numbers to new service
Having paid what I thought was an exorbitant amount each month for multi-line cellular service over many years, I switched my five lines to Pure Talk. During the porting process, AT&T made something that should have been simple, very difficult.
The hours I spent getting the runaround and having their AI bot hang up on me numerous times makes me want to tell others that AT&Ts customer service is very poor.
More than a few times I would find charges on my bill that were not approved and when noticed, had to spend valuable time trying to get those removed. Very frustrating!
I would avoid doing business with AT&T.
Other cellular services like Pure Talk charge less than half what I paid AT&T for the same coverage and their customer service is 10X better.. Im very happy with my new service and should have switched years ago.

Verified Reviewer | Columbus, OhioExtremely poor customer service
Consumer, be aware! I recently checked into the AIR internet service at the Kenwood Mall location.
I was told by a representative that it would come with a 30 day trial. Only after one day, I got a notification from AT&T that there would be a draft from my account 7 days later. 7 days is not 30. I called the store from which I got it, but they were no help.
I called customer service and they were also no help.
This is not how companies that are in the customer service line of business should conduct themselves. If I could give them a negative star rating, I would.

Verified Reviewer | Aurora, ColoradoEmployees being allowed to add lines to plans without authorization
We have now paid for two extra devices added to our account that we have never ordered or had in our possession.
The devices were added the day my husband opened the account, which of course he didn't see on the receipt size contract you sign.
I questioned the amount of our bill and when we looked into the reason for the charge we discovered the extra devices. Not only were we buying, but insured and paid to activate.
AT&T Corporate office, along with 6 other agents we talked to, recognized the devices were added by the employee that originally set up the account, however, there is apparently nothing AT&T will do about it.
I'm disgusted with the promises to refund over $900.00 to us that has never happened and the lack of concern that this is a common practice with AT&T.
I have read the same type of issues in reviews on their own website but nothing changes!
They need to be brought out publicly for what they are allowing. It's criminal.

- Lack of concern on corporate level for employees dishonesty
- Service is inconsistent dropped calls expected
