Called AT&T as soon as I received my bill with last months charges on it. After ckecking my checkbook and saw that I had sent them a payment on the 5th called to let them know I had sent in my payment.

Would they drop the late charges? No of course not.

They were more concerned trying to get me to pay the bill right then, not even considering had been a customer with them for over 40 years. Now they are sending emails threatening cutting service if payment is not received in 5 days.
